What Language Are You Speaking?

The other day my Mother-in-Law posted a status on Twitter. It basically said that she was lounging on the sofa and my niece and nephew were about to take a nap on a pallet.

Now, I'm not sure what a pallet is to you but to me it's a piece of wood that looks like this:

Well, that's what a pallet was to me before I met J's family. When they said "Pallet" they mean something like this:

A bunch of blankets that they pile up to make the ground comfy.

It's always interesting to me how some things mean something totally different in one part of the country than in the other.

For instance, when my Mother-in-Law (they don't ALL involve her . . . Or I would just think it was all just her own language.) says "Light Bread" I think:

LIGHT Bread

However, what she really means is:

Sure, it's light in color. I suppose.

When I went to college I was sitting in class when the instructor said "Put up your books." . . . Huh? I looked up. Were there shelves I was supposed to leave my book on. I am not joking. I had Never heard that expression before in my life. I caught on pretty quick, when I saw what everyone else was doing, that what she meant was "Put your books away." Is that really so hard to say?

I wasn't at college long (maybe a few hours) before one of my roommates asked me where she could plug up her curling iron. Plug it up? Darling, we plug things IN not UP.

"I can't see a thing! Cut on that light!" or "It's late! Would you cut off that light?" These come from both college and J's family.

Cut the light on and off?? That may cause the light to no longer work, just saying . . . However, I can TURN the light on or off, whichever you wish.

So, which do you say? Are there things like this that totally threw you when you heard them?

Cell Phones and Privacy

Today I'm taking a kind of poll.

I'm curious how you approach the situation of your Significant Other's (Husband, Wife, Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Fiance') cell phone.

Are you comfortable with just grabbing their phone and exploring? And, do they mind if you do this?

I pretty much leave J's phone alone. He gets a call, he answers it. Unless he just can't and even then, usually depending on who it is, I still don't answer it. He gets a text message, that's his message and I don't open it to view it. I've never grabbed his phone and just started flipping through calls or messages or even the photo album.

I try to respect that it's his phone because I want him to respect that my phone is my phone. It's not that I'm trying to hide anything from him and I don't have anything to hide on my phone. It's just that sometimes my girl friend and I might be having a private text conversation and I'm sure she wouldn't want him to read. So I keep my nose out of his so that he'll return the favor.

So, how do you work this cell phone thing? Do you and your Significant Other read each others message and stuff or do you basically leave that stuff alone like you might respect a diary?

Just curious. Wondering what your thoughts are.

SEPTEMBER!!!!!

Reasons I want September to here Right Now:

1. Autumn
I need Autumn now. I need Summer to be GONE!!

2. NCIS
Hello, NCIS creators/writers. I would really appreciate it if you could give me some more scenes with McGee and Abby . . . possibly a wedding scene? That would make me very happy. I could do without all the Tony/Ziva stuff for a bit.

3. Bones
Seven Months?!!?!? Grrrr. I would also like to leave a note for the Bones writer peoples. I need Brennan to start thinking with her heart just a tad bit more. I've REALLY been feeling bad for Booth. Although, if Brennan is going to continue to be stubborn than I hope Booth comes back with a girlfriend and I hope he's ecstatically Happy and I hope she feels terrible. I hope she's So jealous she can't sleep at night! (You know, for a while, then I hope they get together and live happily ever after.)

4. Supernatural

A Year?!!?!? I was Very excited for the return of Supernatural but I'm getting over it! No, I'm still excited for it to come back but I'm a little disappointed in some of the spoilers I've read. *Fingers crossed* for a good season.

5. Football
Come Oooooooooooon, Patriots!!!!! That is all.

6. Birthdays
J and the Kiddo's birthdays are both in September. I have fun planning birthday parties.

Am I forgetting anything? If I am I'll edit it in!

WHEN Did That Happen?!?!

I had a conversation the other day. It went somthing like this:

Her: I discovered Anthony Head in Repo! and I've liked him ever since.

Me: Oh yea? I like him too. I've liked him since around '97 when I saw him in Buffy.

Her: Oh, I was two in '97. So . . .

Me: TWO!?!?!?

Right about here I had the "Oh my word, when did I get this old!?" fit in my head.

If that wasn't enough later on that day I noticed it was the birthday of one of my facebook friends. So, I left her a Happy Birthday message. To which she responded:

Her: Thanks! I was thinking of you the other day. I was thinking about when you were my counselor at Kids camp. Good times.

At this point I rushed over to her page to double check how old she had turned. Twenty. Ok . . . Twenty!?!?

This girl was in my dorm room when she was SEVEN!!

Excuse me while I go get some anti-aging cream and hair dye to cover the grays. Also, anyone have a walker or a cane  I can borrow?

Allowances

Did you get an allowance when you were younger? How much did you get? Do you have kids? Do your kids get an allowance? How old were your Kids when you started giving them an allowance? How much do you pay? Are you tired of my questions yet?

I never got an allowance when I was a kid. If I worked, I got paid. My Dad believed that I wouldn't learn the value of money if it was just handed to me and I didn't have to work for it. You know what? I'm okay with that.

I plan to use the same basic idea for the Kiddo. He'll have a list of chores. If they get done, then he'll get paid.

The point of my post is this: How young is too young to start paying my Kiddo?

The Kiddo already helps me out around the house. He always helps me empty and load the washer and dryer. He helps fold towels all the time and he helps change the trash bag. I'm considering starting to pay him a bit.

Obviously I don't plan on paying him like ten bucks a week or anything but something. It would be a good way for him to start saving a bit and he would be all excited to get money for his bank.

So, remember all those questions from the beginning? They belong here too. Thoughts?

Sunday Silly - Talking Dog for Sale

A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: 'Talking Dog For Sale ' He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.

'You talk?' he asks.

'Yep,' the Lab replies.

After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says 'So, what's your story?'

The Lab looks up and says, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the Secret Service. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.'

'I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.' 'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.'

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

'Ten dollars,' the guy says.

'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?'

'Because he's a liar. He never did any of that stuff.'
